If you feel anxiety about visiting the dentist, you are not alone. Many patients experience intense nervousness when faced with the prospect of any dental procedure, even from something as simple as a regular cleaning.

At AV Dental Associates in Jersey City, we administer anxiety-reducing medications to patients who are anxious about dental procedures. This simply means AV Dental’s trained and certified Jersey City staff is authorized to administer medication to make you more comfortable and free from anxiety during the procedure.

Sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” sedation dentistry allows you to relax – you will be on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened. The difference between sedation dentistry and general anesthesia is that under anesthesia you cannot easily be awakened.

Sedation can be administered in multiple forms:

Oral sedation is given via pill and can range from minimal to moderate. Usually, the drug given is similar to something like Valium and is easily tolerated and harbors very little risk. The pill makes you very drowsy and may cause you to become groggy enough to need a ride home from AV Dental Associates’ offices.

Inhaled minimal sedation is administered through a nose mask and is more commonly known as laughing gas or nitrous oxide. This form of sedation usually allows you to drive yourself home without help.

IV moderate sedation involves receiving the drug through a vein with an IV and allows AV Dental associates trained professionals to adjust the dosing in real-time.

Of course, in addition to sedation you will also receive topical anesthetic at the site being worked on during the procedure to relieve any discomfort the procedure may cause.
