Dental Implant Surgery

Although dental implant surgery is a common procedure, you may be unsure about your health afterwards. The specialists of A V Dental can help you follow the right aftercare practices to ensure optimal healing and comfort.

Bleeding

For the first hour, you will bite firmly on wads of gauze that have been placed over the implant surgery site. If bleeding is severe and gauze becomes saturated, you may replace it. After the first hour, you can gently remove the gauze. If bleeding continues, place new gauze and keep biting down until bleeding slows.

The site of your dental implant surgery may ooze blood for 24-48 hours. You can continue to carefully bite down on gauze to absorb fluids. The tannic acid in black or green tea may help to staunch blood flow as well—biting on a moistened tea bag for 30 minutes will promote blood clotting. If heavy bleeding persists after 24-48 hours, please call our office.

Swelling

Applying an ice pack or bag of frozen vegetables to the cheek nearest the site of your implants can help reduce swelling and ease discomfort. If you notice bruising 2-3 days after surgery, don’t panic. Bruising is a normal part of many surgical procedures.

Managing Discomfort

Most patients experience discomfort after dental implant surgery. Effectively managing pain can help with healing and keep you comfortable. We recommend that you take any prescribed pain medicine before the local anesthetic has worn off. If severe pain persists, you may supplement narcotic pain medicine with 600-800 mg of ibuprofen every six hours. Pain typically subsides in a few days and ibuprofen alone should be enough to manage your discomfort.

Activity

Exercise, bending or heavy lifting can increase pain, bleeding, and swelling. Refrain from working out or exerting yourself for the first 24-48 hours following surgery.

Taking Care of Your Mouth

Do not disturb the dental implant surgery site while it is healing. Avoid vigorous rinsing or probing the area with your finger or any object. It is important that you gently brush your teeth to keep your mouth clean, but avoid the surgery site for a few days. If you smoke, quit. Smoking inhibits healing and can cause increased discomfort.

Eating and Drinking

Nourishing soft foods such as scrambled eggs, yogurt and fruit smoothies can help you feel better more quickly and facilitate healing. Avoid hot drinks and DO NOT use a straw for the first few days after surgery. The suction can dislodge blood clots and cause implants to fail.
