Osseous Dental Surgery

Osseous Dental Surgery in Jersey City, NJ

What Is Osseous Dental Surgery?Advanced gum disease can cause many dental problems, including bad breath, sore and bleeding gums, loose teeth and eventual tooth loss. At AV Dental Associates, our periodontist can evaluate the condition of your teeth and gums and determine which type of periodontal treatment will best fit your needs.

Also known as pocket depth reduction, osseous dental surgery is a periodontal procedure that can halt the progression of periodontal disease by reducing the depth of the pockets around your teeth and eliminating bacteria.

When your gums are healthy, your bone and gum tissue fit firmly around your teeth, protecting them from the damage and decay that is caused by bacteria. Periodontal disease gradually destroys the supporting tissue and bone, forming deep pockets around the teeth. If left untreated, these pockets can become deeper. More bacteria accumulate and advance under the gum tissue, resulting in additional bone and tissue damage. If you have gum disease that has advanced to this point, osseous surgery can help save your teeth.

How Is Osseous Dental Surgery Performed?

Your periodontist will administer a local anesthetic to ensure that you’re comfortable during the procedure. Once your mouth is numb, he or she gently folds back flaps of gum tissue and removes the harmful bacteria. If the bone has been damaged, its surface will be smoothed to get rid of any tiny crevices where bacteria can hide. Smoothing the bone also allows your gum tissue to more effectively reattach to healthy bone. Your periodontist will then put the gum tissue back in place and suture the treated areas.

To prevent infection, you also may be given antibiotics before, during and after treatment. Our periodontist will send you home with post-operative care instructions, and in about a week, you will come back in to make sure the area is healing properly.

Periodontal Maintenance

A good oral hygiene routine that includes brushing twice daily, flossing and using an antiseptic mouthwash can help keep gum disease at bay. Seeing your dentist every 3-4 months for professional periodontal maintenance is essential to help you avoid the recurrence of gum disease, save your natural teeth and decrease the chances of serious health issues often associated with periodontal disease.
