Dental Surgery for Gum Disease

Some of the problems that advanced gum disease can cause include loose teeth, bleeding gums, bad breath, and tooth loss. At AV Dental, periodontists evaluate the condition of a person’s teeth and gums following which they determine the type of periodontal treatment that will fit the person’s need most appropriately. We offer a special type of surgery that is known as osseous dental surgery. This is a procedure that has the capacity to halt the progression of periodontal disease, something it does by reducing the depth of pockets around an individual’s teeth thereby eliminating bacteria.

Naturally, a health gum has the bone and the gum tissues firmly fitting around his or her teeth. This protects the teeth from the damage and decay which is usually caused by bacteria. Periodontal disease basically destroys the supporting tissues and the bone resulting in the formation of pockets around the teeth. If not treated, this leads to deepening of the pockets and a sequential increase of bacteria in the gum tissues which in turn enhances tissue and bone damage. However, the gum diseases are treatable with osseous surgery.

Osseous Dental Surgery Procedure

The periodontist administers a local anesthesia to hinder pain and grant comfort to the patient during the procedure. This is followed by folding back the flaps of the gum tissue and removal of the harmful bacteria. Additionally, if the bone has already been damaged, the surface is smoothed with a goal of getting rid of every tiny crevice where bacteria likes hiding. This process also creates an avenue for the gum tissue to reattach to the healthy bone more effectively. This is followed by putting the gum tissue to its original place and suturing of the treated areas.

Our periodontist will also give the patient medications that deter bacterial infections before, after and during the treatment in addition to issuing him or her with post-operative care instructions.
